Washing, drying & caring for a duvet – step by step

How often to wash, which washing machine is sufficient, and how to dry properly? The guide for down and Primaloft organic duvets – with tips to prevent flat down and new product smell.

Bettdecke waschen, trocknen & pflegen – Schritt für Schritt

In short: You rarely need to wash a duvet – about once a year, at most every two years, if you use it with a cover and ventilate it regularly. It can be washed in the washing machine with down or delicate detergent, without fabric softener, on a delicate cycle at the maximum temperature allowed by the care label (up to 60 °C for Traumwelt duvets). Primaloft organic duvets are washed in the same way. The most important step is drying it completely in the dryer at a low temperature with dryer balls – only then will the down loft again.

How often should you wash your duvet, what size washing machine is sufficient, how do you dry it properly, and what helps if a duvet looks flat or smells? Here you will find all the answers step by step – for down duvets and for vegan Primaloft organic duvets.

How often should you wash it?

Product Complete wash
Down duvet about once a year up to every two years
Primaloft organic duvet up to 4 times a year
Pillow 2–4 times a year

Washing, drying & caring for a duvet – step by step

More important than frequent washing is daily ventilation: turn back the duvet in the morning or place it by an open window for 15–30 minutes – outdoors is also fine, but in the shade instead of in direct sunlight. This removes moisture and odors. A washable duvet cover additionally protects the duvet in everyday use. Pillows have direct contact with skin and hair and therefore need to be washed more often – how to do this is explained in the guide Washing down pillows.

Washing a down duvet: step by step

  1. Check the care label: It shows the maximum temperature and whether it is suitable for drying.
  2. Check the machine size: The duvet must be able to move freely in the drum (see table below).
  3. Measure out the detergent: Down or delicate detergent, using sparingly. No fabric softener – it clogs the down.
  4. Choose a delicate cycle: Delicate or down program, low spin speed.
  5. Extra rinse: An additional rinse cycle removes detergent residues.
  6. Dry immediately: Do not leave the wet duvet lying around, but put it directly in the dryer.

Which washing machine is sufficient for which duvet size?

Duvet size Drum (rule of thumb)
135 × 200 cm approx. 7 kg capacity
155 × 220 cm approx. 8 kg
200 × 200 cm and 240 × 220 cm from approx. 9–10 kg or a large machine at the laundromat

Winter duvets with a lot of filling need the larger drum: A Traumwelt winter duvet with 90% down has 900 g of filling in 135 × 200 cm, and even 1,760 g in 240 × 220 cm – when wet, it becomes significantly heavier and bulkier. If the machine is too small, the duvet will not get evenly clean and will dry poorly.

Washing a Primaloft organic duvet

Vegan Primaloft organic duvets are particularly easy to care for: They can go in the washing machine at 60 °C and tolerate washing well. The same applies here: mild detergent without fabric softener, a large drum, and then drying completely – in the dryer at a low temperature or spread out in the air. Because of their easy care, they are a good choice for allergy sufferers who want to wash their duvet more often.

Drying – the most important step

The most common mistake is incomplete drying. Damp down clumps together, smells, and in the worst case can mold. Therefore, dry the duvet in the dryer at a low temperature together with 3–4 dryer balls (or clean tennis balls), which fluff up the down. Take it out in between and shake it out. This usually takes several hours – until the duvet is completely dry and beautifully fluffy again.

Troubleshooting: clumped, flat, smells, or got wet

Problem Probable cause What helps?
Clumped after washing Residual moisture, the down is still sticking together continue in the dryer at a low temperature with dryer balls, loosen clumps with your hands in between
Duvet is flat Residual moisture or compressed filling Dryer cycle with dryer balls, then shake out vigorously
Smells after washing not completely dried through dry again immediately until the inside is also dry
Washed with fabric softener Fabric softener forms a film around the down wash again with down or delicate detergent without fabric softener, extra rinse, dry completely
Washed with regular detergent too aggressive, residues stick the down together rinse with clear water or wash again with a little down detergent
Got wet (drink, rain) Moisture in the filling do not leave it lying around: rinse out the stain or wash the whole duvet and dry thoroughly immediately
Filling is uneven Down has shifted in the chambers Hold the duvet at the ends and shake out vigorously, loosen chambers by hand

If a duvet still remains permanently flat or uneven despite being dry, it is time for a new one – more on this in 5 signs that you need a new duvet.

Drying without a dryer – is it possible?

Possible, but time-consuming. A down duvet needs several days in the air until it is dry inside too. Here is how you do it:

  • Spread the duvet flat on a large drying rack, do not hang it over a line – otherwise the wet filling will sag downwards.
  • Initially shake it out about every hour and loosen clumps by hand, later several times a day.
  • Dry in a well-ventilated room or in the shade, not on the heater and not in direct sunlight.
  • Only use it again when the middle of the chambers also feels dry – residual moisture leads to odors and in the worst case to mold spots.

Without your own dryer, a large-capacity dryer at the laundromat is often the better solution. Primaloft organic duvets dry significantly faster in the air than down.

Yellow stains and yellowed duvets

Yellowish stains are usually caused by sweat, skin oils, and saliva, which settle into the cover fabric over time. You can pre-treat individual stains before washing with a little delicate detergent or gall soap – dab carefully, do not rub. Bleaching agents and stain salt with bleach are taboo for down. Honestly: older stains do not always come out completely. The best way to prevent this is to always use a duvet cover and change it regularly.

New down duvet smells – what to do?

Natural down can have a slight characteristic odor at first. This is not a defect, but typical for a natural product, and usually disappears after a short time. It goes faster by ventilating in the fresh air (not in direct sunlight), fluffing it out, and if necessary, a short dryer cycle with dryer balls. If the duvet smells after washing, it was usually not completely dried through. Explained in detail in the guide New down duvet smells?.

How long does a down duvet last?

A high-quality down duvet often lasts 10 years or longer with good care. Regular ventilation, infrequent but thorough washing, and complete drying are crucial. For the summer break, there are tips under How to store your duvet properly.

According to the care label, our All-season duvet with 90% down and the vegan Primaloft organic all-season duvet, which dries particularly quickly, are washable at up to 60 °C.

Frequently asked questions

Can a down duvet go in the dryer?
Yes – the dryer is even important so that the down lofts again. Low temperature, dryer balls, dry completely.

Can I have a down duvet dry cleaned?
This is generally not recommended for down; for Traumwelt duvets, dry cleaning is excluded according to the care label. Washing and thorough drying are gentler.

Is the new smell harmful?
No. Our duvets are OEKO-TEX® certified and thus tested for harmful substances; the slight natural odor is harmless and disappears.

I accidentally used fabric softener – is the duvet ruined?
Usually not. Wash it again with down or delicate detergent without fabric softener, let it extra rinse, and dry it completely with dryer balls. Usually, the down lofts again after that.

Can I use fabric conditioner?
No. Fabric conditioner, especially with bleach, damages the down and is unnecessary in the household – a wash at 60 °C is sufficient for hygiene.

Is wool detergent also okay?
Yes. Down consists of keratin like wool, so a mild wool detergent is therefore a good alternative to down detergent. Regular detergent and powder with optical brighteners are not suitable.

Can I ventilate the duvet in the sun?
Ventilating in the fresh air, yes, direct sunlight, preferably not: heat and UV light dry out the down and cover fabric. Find a shady spot.

Does ventilating in frost help against mites?
Hardly. Dust mites survive normal frost. Only temperatures of about −15 °C over several days affect them. Regular washing at 60 °C and a NOMITE-certified cover help against mites – more on this in the guide Dust mite allergy & Bedding.

How much does it cost to have a down duvet cleaned?
A pure wash at a feather bed cleaner often costs about 20 to 45 euros, depending on size and provider. With refilling and a new inner cover, it becomes significantly more expensive. For Traumwelt duvets, this is usually not necessary: according to the care label, they are washable in the washing machine at up to 60 °C.

Down duvet washed too hot – what now?
Still dry the duvet completely at a low temperature with dryer balls and shake it out vigorously. Often the filling recovers. If the fabric has shrunk afterwards, the filling is stuck together, or the duvet is permanently flat, this usually cannot be undone. A feather bed cleaner can help with a high-quality filling – more on this in the guide Reconditioning an old down duvet. According to the care label, Traumwelt down duvets tolerate up to 60 °C.

How do I wash a climate duvet?
Like a normal down duvet. Our climate duvets with climate bands are washable in the washing machine at up to 60 °C and may then go in the dryer – please observe the care label. For large duvets, you need a machine with a large drum or the laundromat. What makes a climate duvet special is explained in the guide Climate duvet or cassette duvet?.

How do I wash a down pillow?
Basically the same way, only more often – the details are in the guide Washing down pillows.

You will find all the details for every product in our care instructions. Always also observe the care label of your duvet.

Traumwelt down duvets have a cover made of 100% cotton and are washable at up to 60 °C according to the care label and suitable for drying at a low temperature; Primaloft organic duvets are also washable at up to 60 °C.
