New duvet smells, rustles or squeaks? Causes and what helps

Why a new duvet sometimes smells, rustles, or pokes you with feathers – and what helps in each case.

In short: A slight natural odor is normal with new down duvets. Down is a natural product, and the odor is usually caused by the duvet being packaged for a long time. It usually disappears after a few days of airing and shaking. If a duvet smells musty or only after washing, it was almost always not completely dry – in that case, another drying cycle helps. A slight rustling is also normal with new duvets and subsides after a few nights.

Why does a new down duvet smell?

Down and feathers are a natural material with a slight natural odor. As long as the duvet is airtightly packaged, it cannot escape. After unpacking, it usually dissipates quickly. The odor is not a sign of poor quality and is harmless in duvets tested for harmful substances (OEKO-TEX® Standard 100).

What helps – depending on the cause?

Situation Probable cause What helps
New duvet, straight after unpacking Packaging, natural odor spread out, leave out in the fresh air for a few hours (not in direct sunlight), shake out
Odor after washing Residual moisture in the filling dry completely again in the dryer at a low temperature with dryer balls
Musty odor after long-term storage too little air, damp storage place air out, dry if necessary; store in a breathable fabric cover in the future

The right storage is explained by the guide Storing a duvet correctly, drying step by step by the guide Washing, drying & caring for a down duvet.

When should I contact you?

If the odor does not subside even after several days of airing or if the duvet smells musty even though it has never been washed. Then contact us – within 30 days you can return Traumwelt duvets, the return shipment within Germany is free.

Why does a new down duvet rustle?

The rustling comes from the cover fabric. To prevent down from escaping, it is woven particularly tightly (down-proof). New fabric is still somewhat stiff at first and therefore rustles with every movement. Through body heat, moisture, and use, the fabric becomes softer – after a few nights, the rustling usually subsides significantly. Washing also makes the fabric more supple. A higher feather content can also cause some rustling.

Feathers poke through or the duvet loses feathers

A down duvet with 90% down contains 10% small feathers. It can happen that a single feather tip pokes through the cover.

  • Do not pull it out: Pull the feather back into the duvet from the other side. If you pull it out, the hole in the fabric will enlarge.
  • Rub the fabric smooth: Rub the area lightly between your fingers afterwards so that the fabric closes again.
  • Contact us if there are many feathers: If feathers or down come out in many places, that is not normal behavior. Then contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Is the new smell harmful?
No. In OEKO-TEX®-certified duvets, all components are tested for harmful substances; the slight natural odor is harmless and disappears.

Does fragrance spray help against the odor?
Better not. Fragrances only mask the odor and can make the down stick together. Airing and drying solve the cause.

How long does a new down duvet rustle?
Usually only a few nights. The more often you use the duvet, the softer the tightly woven cover fabric becomes and the quieter it gets.

Is it normal that a down duvet loses feathers?
Individual little feathers, yes, especially in the first few weeks. If the duvet permanently loses many feathers or down, the fabric or a seam is damaged – then contact us.

All Traumwelt down duvets are tested according to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 and are manufactured by German manufacturing partners.
