Climate bands in duvets: What they are and what they do
Climate bands are breathable fabric strips between the filling channels of a duvet. How they work, what they can do – and what they cannot.
Inhalt
In short: Climate bands are narrow, open-weave fabric strips between the filling channels of a duvet. Because they are much more breathable than the dense cover fabric, warm, moist air can escape more easily. This reduces heat buildup under the duvet. Climate bands do not actively cool – with the same amount of filling, the duvet provides the same warmth but feels airier.
What does a climate band look like?
A climate band is a strip a few centimeters wide made of an open, porous fabric – similar to a fine mesh fabric. It connects the top and bottom of the duvet between two filling channels. From the outside, you can recognize it as a lighter, perforated line running lengthwise across the duvet.
Why do heat and moisture build up under the duvet?
During sleep, the body releases heat and moisture. A good down duvet absorbs moisture and releases it to the outside. However, the cover fabric must be down-proof to prevent down from escaping – and a dense fabric only allows a limited amount of air through. People who sleep warm especially feel this as heat buildup.
What are the benefits of climate bands?
- More air exchange: Warm, moist air can escape more easily through the open bands.
- Less heat buildup: It stays more comfortable under the duvet, especially for people who sweat quickly at night.
- Same warmth rating: You can keep the warmth rating that suits your bedroom instead of having to settle for a duvet that is too light.
What climate bands cannot do
Climate bands do not turn a duvet that is too warm into a summer duvet. If the overall warmth rating is too warm for your bedroom, a lighter duvet will be more effective. Which one that is can be found in the guide Warmth ratings explained. You can find a direct comparison of the construction methods under Climate duvet or cassette duvet?
Frequently asked questions
Does down escape through the climate bands?
No. The climate bands are located between the filling channels, and the channels themselves are sealed with down-proof cotton fabric.
Do I still need a duvet cover with climate bands?
Yes. Like any down duvet, a climate duvet should always be used with a cover. A cover made of cotton or satin is also breathable.
Are climate bands only available for down duvets?
No, the construction works with various fillings. Traumwelt currently offers climate duvets with 90% down in summer, all-season, and winter versions.
