Climate blanket or cassette blanket? Differences, benefits & which one is right for whom

Same filling, different construction: What sets an air-flow blanket with air channels apart from a classic baffle box blanket – and which blanket is right for whom.

Traumwelt BettwarenfabrikBettwaren-Team aus Berlin

In short: A baffle box duvet is divided into many sewn-shut squares that keep the filling in place. A climate duvet instead has continuous channels separated by breathable climate bands – through these bands, excess heat and moisture can escape more easily. With the same filling, both provide the same level of warmth; the climate duvet is especially worth it for anyone who gets warm quickly at night or tends to sweat.

Climate blanket or cassette blanket? Differences, benefits & which one is right for whom

Two down duvets with the same filling can still feel different in bed. The reason is the construction: how the cover is sewn and how air can circulate through the duvet. Here you will find out how baffle box duvets and climate duvets differ and which one is right for you.

What is a baffle box duvet?

In a baffle box duvet, the top and bottom fabrics are sewn together with baffles into many individual squares (boxes). Each box contains a fixed amount of filling. This prevents the filling from shifting, eliminates cold spots, and ensures the duvet warms evenly everywhere. Baffle box quilting is the classic construction for high-quality down duvets – our down duvets are also made this way.

What is a climate duvet?

A climate duvet has the same purpose – to distribute the filling evenly –, but achieves it differently: Instead of closed boxes, it has lengthwise channels. Between the channels are narrow, open-weave fabric strips, the climate bands. They are significantly more breathable than the dense, down-proof cover fabric.

What are climate bands and how do they work?

Heat and moisture are generated under the duvet at night – a person releases water vapor through the skin while sleeping. In a climate duvet, this warm, moist air can escape outwards more easily through the climate bands. The result is less heat buildup under the duvet. Important: The climate bands do not actively cool – they ensure that excess heat does not build up. Explained in detail in the article Climate bands in duvets.

Climate duvet and baffle box duvet compared

Baffle box duvet Climate duvet
Construction sewn-shut squares continuous channels with breathable climate bands
Warmth dependent on filling amount and warmth rating dependent on filling amount and warmth rating
Air exchange through the breathable cover through the cover and additionally through the climate bands
Ideal for normal warmth perception anyone who gets warm quickly at night
Traumwelt All-season example, 135 × 200 cm 624 g, 90% down 625 g, 90% down

At Traumwelt, both variants have the same down quality (Class I, approx. 750 Cuin). In the all-season and winter versions, the filling amount is also practically the same (624 g to 625 g in 135 × 200 cm, or 900 g each) – there the difference lies solely in the construction. The summer duvets are different: The Summer climate duvet is significantly more filled with 350 g in 135 × 200 cm than the classic Summer down duvet with 250 g.

For whom is a climate duvet worth it?

  • You often wake up at night covered in sweat, although the warmth rating matches the room temperature.
  • You quickly get stuffily warm under down duvets, but you do not want to give up down.
  • You share the bedroom with someone who likes it warmer – and you need a more breathable duvet yourself.
  • You like a warm duvet in winter, but sweat slightly under a thick winter duvet.

If you are dealing with night sweats during menopause, you will find more tips in the guide Duvet in menopause.

For whom is the classic baffle box duvet sufficient?

If you are neither too warm nor too cold at night, the baffle box duvet offers everything you need – and is slightly cheaper. Those who get cold quickly are also well advised to choose a classic winter duvet.

Climate duvet or rather a lighter warmth rating?

That depends on why you are warm:

  • The duvet is overall too warm for your bedroom: Then a lighter warmth rating helps, for example all-season instead of winter. Which one is right for you is explained in the guide Warmth ratings.
  • The warmth rating is right, but heat builds up and you still sweat: Then the climate duvet is the better solution, because it offers the same warmth with more air exchange.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a climate duvet cooler than a normal down duvet?
Not in terms of cooling. With the same filling amount, it warms just as much. However, it allows excess heat and moisture to escape more easily, so less heat builds up under the duvet.

Does the filling shift in a climate duvet?
The channels keep the filling in place across the width. As with any down duvet, it helps to give the duvet a quick shake in the morning – then the filling distributes evenly and the down fluffs up again.

Can I wash a climate duvet?
Yes, the Traumwelt climate duvets are washable up to 60 °C and suitable for tumble drying – please always check the care label. More in the guide Washing, drying & caring for duvets.

Is the climate duvet available in all warmth ratings?
Yes, as Summer climate duvet, All-season climate duvet and Winter climate duvet – each with 90% down, in four sizes.

Is the climate duvet suitable for house dust allergy sufferers?
Yes. The densely woven cotton cover is NOMITE-certified and therefore suitable for house dust allergy sufferers. For an allergy to down or feathers themselves, a vegan Primaloft bio duvet is the better choice.

Traumwelt climate duvets: 90% Class I down, breathable climate bands, OEKO-TEX®, DOWNPASS and NOMITE – manufactured by German manufacturing partners.
