Down duvet vs. microfiber – an honest comparison

Down leads in warmth, breathability, and durability, while microfiber is more affordable and easier to care for. Primaloft Bio is the better alternative for vegans or those with a down allergy.

In short: Down duvets are clearly superior to microfiber duvets in terms of warmth, breathability, and lifespan (often 10 years or more instead of 3–5 years); microfiber is cheaper and easier to care for. If you are vegan or have a genuine down allergy, Primaloft Bio is your best choice – the fiber is much closer to down than standard microfiber.

Down duvet or microfiber? This question almost always arises when buying a new duvet. Both have their place, but the differences are greater than many people think. We compare them honestly and without marketing jargon.

Warmth and insulation

Down: Down is an excellent natural insulation material. It traps air in its three-dimensional structures and provides a lot of warmth despite its low weight. High-quality Class I down, like ours, has a very high fill power of around 750 cuin.

Microfiber: Cheap microfiber duvets keep you warm at first, but lose their insulating power much faster than down. After 2–3 years, the filling becomes compressed and the warmth decreases.

Winner: Down

Breathability

Down: Down actively regulates body temperature. It absorbs moisture and releases it to the outside – this prevents overheating and sweating, even under a warm duvet.

Microfiber: Cheap microfiber is significantly worse at wicking away moisture. Many people sweat more under microfiber duvets – especially in summer or in warm bedrooms.

Winner: Down (Exception: high-quality Primaloft Bio fibers, which perform almost as well as down)

Care

Down: Wash at 60 °C on a delicate cycle, then tumble dry with tennis balls. A full wash is usually only necessary about once a year or less. It is slightly more involved than microfiber.

Microfiber: Usually easier to wash, often at higher temperatures. Dries faster.

Winner: Microfiber (in terms of care)

Lifespan

Down: With proper care, often 10 years or more. The initial investment pays off over the years.

Microfiber: 3–5 years for budget products. Higher-quality synthetic fibers last longer.

Winner: Down

Price

Down: Significantly more expensive to buy – but often cheaper over its lifespan.

Microfiber: Cheap to buy, but needs to be replaced more often.

Winner: It depends on the calculation

Conclusion

Down duvets are superior in almost every category – especially in terms of warmth, breathability, and lifespan. If you are vegan or have a genuine down allergy, Primaloft Bio is an excellent alternative: It significantly outperforms cheap microfiber duvets and comes very close to down.

For comparison: our All-Season 90% Down Duvet and the vegan Primaloft Bio All-Season Duvet – both washable at 60 °C.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Primaloft Bio the same as microfiber?
No. Both are synthetic fibers, but Primaloft Bio is softer, more breathable, and made from recycled polyester that, according to PrimaLoft laboratory tests, biodegrades in landfill and marine conditions. In terms of sleep comfort, it is much closer to down than standard microfiber.

What is better for people with dust mite allergies?
Both options work: a down duvet with a NOMITE-certified, tightly woven cover – which applies to all Traumwelt down duvets – or a vegan Primaloft Bio duvet that you can wash at 60 °C. Read more in the Dust Mite Allergy & Bedding guide.

Why is a down duvet lighter?
Down traps a lot of air. Thanks to a fill power of around 750 cuin, a Traumwelt all-season down duvet measuring 135 × 200 cm requires only 624 g of filling. Standard synthetic fiber usually needs more material to provide the same warmth.
