Are Down Duvets Suitable for Allergy Sufferers? Dust Mite Allergies & Bedding
House dust mite allergy sufferers do not have to do without down: What matters is a tightly woven, NOMITE-certified cover. Only in the case of a genuine down allergy is Primaloft Bio the better choice.
Inhalt
In short: Yes – people with dust mite allergies do not have to do without down. The key is a tightly woven, NOMITE®-certified cover that leaves dust mites with no foothold. Only in the case of a genuine allergy to down or feathers – which is rare – are vegan Primaloft Bio bedding products the better choice. In addition, washing, airing out the room daily, and a cool, dry bedroom help.
Many allergy sufferers believe they have to do without down duvets and down pillows. This is only true in rare cases. Here you will learn what really triggers the allergy, what the NOMITE, OEKO-TEX, and DOWNPASS seals mean, and which bedding is right for you.

What triggers dust mite allergies?
The name is misleading: the trigger is not dust, but the excrement of dust mites. Mites like it warm and damp – the bed is their favorite habitat. They feed on skin flakes and like to nest in the filling of pillows and duvets.
Can allergy sufferers use down duvets?
Yes. The allergy is directed against mites, not down. A down-proof, very tightly woven cover prevents mites from penetrating the filling and keeps their excrement away from the sleeper. This is exactly what the NOMITE seal confirms. In addition, a down duvet can be washed, which further reduces allergens.
What is a genuine down allergy?
A genuine allergy to down or feathers is rare. In this case, symptoms occur upon contact with the material itself, not just through mites. In this case – or if you want to completely avoid animal products – our vegan Primaloft Bio duvets are the right choice: down-like softness, machine washable at 60 °C, and allergy-friendly.
The seals explained briefly
| Seal | What it means |
|---|---|
| NOMITE® | Bedding suitable for people with dust mite allergies thanks to a tight inner cover |
| OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 | all components independently tested for harmful substances – also for sensitive skin and children |
| DOWNPASS | Down ethically sourced (no live plucking, no intensive farming) and traceable |

Tips for allergy sufferers in the bedroom
- Wash bedding regularly – at 60 °C, mites are reliably killed (check the care label)
- Always use a duvet cover and pillowcase and change them frequently
- Air out the duvet daily – mites do not like dry air
- Keep the bedroom cool and dry, ideally below 50% humidity
- Choose NOMITE-certified bedding
Bedding for allergy sufferers
The duvet cover is the layer that lies directly against your skin. Skin flakes and sweat land there first – and skin flakes are the food of the mites. Clean bedding therefore also keeps the duvet and pillows cleaner. This is what matters:
- Wash at 60 °C: Make sure your bedding can withstand this temperature, and always wash the duvet and pillow covers together. A look at the care label is worth it.
- Change regularly: The German Association of Household Care and Detergents (IKW) recommends changing the bed linen at the latest after two weeks (Source: Berliner Kurier). For dust mite allergies, we recommend changing the duvet and pillow covers about once a week. Further exceptions and tips are in the guide How often should you change your bed linen?
- Two sets to alternate: This way, a fresh cover is always ready while the other is in the wash.
- Dry completely: Damp covers should not go back on the bed – mites like it damp.
Important to know: The protection against mites in the filling is provided by the NOMITE-certified cover of the duvet or pillow itself. The bedding complements it because you can wash it often and at high temperatures.
The right pillow for allergy sufferers
The pillow lies directly against the nose and mouth all night long – for allergy sufferers, it is therefore at least as important as the duvet. The same rule applies: Usually, it is not the down that is the problem, but the mite. You can find a comparison of all pillow fillings in the guide Down, feather, or Primaloft pillow?
- For dust mite allergies: 3-chamber down pillow or 3-chamber hybrid pillow – both with a NOMITE-certified cover.
- For allergies to down or feathers, or if you sleep vegan: Primaloft Bio pillow – animal-free, washable at 60 °C, and height-adjustable.
Wash your pillow more frequently than the duvet and the pillow cover together with the bedding. How to do it is explained in the guide Washing a pillow.
