How often to change bed linen? Recommendation, exceptions and tips
How often you should change your bedding: the IKW recommendation, when a more frequent schedule makes sense – for sweating, allergies, summer and pets – and why the cover protects your blanket.
Inhalt
In short: The German Association of Personal Care and Laundry Detergents (IKW) recommends changing your bed linen every two weeks. According to the IKW, you should change it weekly if you sweat heavily at night or sleep naked. A shorter rotation is also advisable if you have a house dust allergy, during hot summer nights, or if a pet sleeps in bed with you.
How often you should change your bed linen is a real bone of contention. According to the Berliner Kurier, a GfK survey commissioned by Galaxus found that one-third of respondents change their bed linen monthly, a good 41 percent every two weeks, and just under 18 percent weekly. Here you will find out what experts recommend, when you should change it more often, and why regularly washed linen also protects your duvet.
The recommendation: every two weeks
According to the German Association of Personal Care and Laundry Detergents (IKW), your duvet and pillow should be freshly covered at the latest after two weeks. This has also been reported by the Berliner Kurier and the German Press Agency, among others. The IKW's basic principle: the more you sweat, the more frequently textiles that come into contact with the skin should be washed.
Other experts come to a similar conclusion. In the Apotheken Umschau (February 2026), Martina Schäfer, a household management expert from the German Society for Household Management, considers changing every two weeks to be sufficient. Microbiologist Prof. Markus Egert says two to four weeks—but only if no animals sleep in bed with you. In his view, bed linen is changed primarily because of odors or because it becomes greasy.
Two weeks are therefore a good guideline for everyday life. You can always do it more often.
When you should change it more often
According to Egert, humans lose about half a liter of sweat per night on average. Skin flakes and skin oils are added to this. Anything that puts more strain on the linen should shorten the rotation. The table shows what is proven—and where there is only a cautious rule of thumb.
| Situation | Rotation | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Normal case | every two weeks | IKW recommendation |
| You sweat heavily at night | weekly | IKW recommendation |
| You sleep naked | weekly | IKW recommendation |
| Hot summer nights | probably weekly, if you sweat more | IKW principle: more sweat, wash more often |
| House dust allergy | more often than every two weeks | Berliner Kurier; clarify details with a doctor |
| Pet sleeps in bed with you | more often than usual | Apotheken Umschau (Egert); the sources do not state a fixed value |
| Pillowcase | in between, as soon as it smells or has stains | practical rule of thumb, not a medical recommendation |
Sweating and summer
In summer, most people sweat more at night. According to the IKW principle, this means washing more often. If the linen is damp or smells in the morning, once a week is a good pace. Often, a lighter duvet also helps—find out more in the night sweats guide. The guide satin, mako-satin, percale or flannel explains which bed linen fabric feels cooler on warm nights. If you sweat heavily at night for no apparent reason, have it checked by a doctor.
House dust allergy
House dust mites feed on skin flakes. Frequently washed linen takes away some of their food. Many allergy sufferers therefore change it more often and wash it at 60 °C, provided the care label allows it. Which bedding is suitable is explained in the guide house dust allergy and bedding. Please discuss treatment and measures with your doctor.
Pets in bed
Dogs or cats bring hair, dirt, and skin flakes into bed. The range of two to four weeks mentioned by microbiologist Egert expressly only applies without animals in bed. If your pet sleeps in bed with you, therefore change it more often—at the latest when you see hair or dirt on the linen.
Pillowcase
Your face and hair lie directly on the pillow—with skin oils, hair care products, and makeup residue. We have not found a specific medical recommendation for pillowcases. It has proven effective to change it in between when it smells or shows stains. Yellow stains on the pillow itself are usually related to sweat—find out more in the guide pillows with yellow stains.
Changing the bed linen does not mean washing the duvet
The cover is the protection for your duvet. It catches sweat, skin oils, and skin flakes before they get into the cover and filling. If you change the cover regularly, you only need to wash the duvet itself rarely. How often this is advisable and what to look out for with down and fiber is explained in the guide washing a duvet. Why a down duvet should always be in a cover is explained in the article duvet without a cover. How to wash your bed linen properly yourself—temperature, dryer, ironing—is explained in the guide washing bed linen.
How to stick to a regular rotation
- Two sets per bed: One is on the bed, the other is in the laundry or in the closet. This way, you can immediately put on fresh linen on the change day. The guide bed linen sizes shows which size you need.
- Fixed day of the week: A fixed date, such as every second Sunday, makes changing a routine.
- Change the sheet and pillowcase too: The duvet cover, sheet, and pillowcase should be changed at the same time.
- Air out in the morning: Turn back the duvet in the morning and air out briefly. This allows the moisture from the night to escape.
- Zipper instead of buttons: A cover with a zipper is quicker to change.

The German Association of Personal Care and Laundry Detergents (IKW) recommends every two weeks. According to the IKW, you should change it weekly if you sweat heavily at night or sleep naked.
Is changing your bed linen once a month enough?
For most people, that is too infrequent. Microbiologist Markus Egert considers up to four weeks acceptable—but only if no animals sleep in bed with you. At the latest when the cover smells, it is time.
Do I need to change it more often in summer?
If you sweat more, yes. Then a weekly change is advisable.
How often should I change the sheet?
Ideally together with the duvet cover and pillowcase, so normally every two weeks.
Do I need to wash the duvet just as often?
No. If you change the cover regularly, it is enough to wash the duvet itself only rarely. Details are explained in the guide washing a duvet.
