What is down?
Down is the soft under-feather of geese and ducks. It has no quill, but a three-dimensional, spherical structure. This allows it to trap a lot of air – it retains warmth, regulates moisture, and is feather-light. A down duvet with 90% or 100% Class I down is the premium product among bed duvets. What is Primaloft Bio?
Primaloft Bio is a high-tech fiber developed as a vegan alternative to down. According to PrimaLoft, it consists of 100% recycled polyester, with additives mixed in so that microorganisms can break down the fiber under certain conditions (see below). It is softer, lighter, and loftier than regular microfiber and comes very close to the feel of down.

Warmth and breathability
At the same weight, down warms slightly better and adapts more precisely to body temperature. That is why Primaloft Bio duvets are available as separate summer, all-season, and winter duvets – choose the warmth class to suit your bedroom. Because the fiber does not absorb moisture, it is particularly hygienic – a plus if you sweat a lot at night.
Care
Primaloft Bio scores points here: The duvets are machine washable at 60 °C and dry quickly. Down duvets require more care when drying, but last longer with proper care. Find out how in the guide Washing & caring for duvets.
Origin and material
Down is a natural material – obtained with a DOWNPASS certificate without live-plucking or stuffing mills and fully traceable. According to PrimaLoft, Primaloft Bio consists of recycled polyester. Regarding degradability, PrimaLoft cites laboratory tests: 93.8% degradation in 646 days under accelerated landfill conditions and 76.6% in 973 days under accelerated marine conditions. The fiber does not degrade during use or in the wardrobe, and it is not compostable.
For allergy sufferers
Contrary to popular belief, down duvets with a NOMITE cover are very suitable for dust mite allergy sufferers. Only with a genuine down allergy is Primaloft Bio the better choice. Learn more in the guide Dust mite allergy & Bedding.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good alternative to a down duvet?
A duvet with Primaloft Bio. The fiber comes closest to the feel of down among synthetic fibers, is completely animal-free, and is washable at 60 °C. Regular microfiber is cheaper, but heavier and less lofty.
Is a vegan duvet cheaper than a down duvet?
Usually, yes. Primaloft Bio is priced between regular microfiber and down. What a good down duvet costs is explained in the guide How much does a good duvet cost?
Is vegan worse than down?
No, just different. Primaloft Bio is a high-tech fiber with very good comfort – the choice depends on your priorities: animal-free, care, or feel.
Is Primaloft Bio warmer than down?
No, at the same fill weight, down warms slightly better. Whether a duvet is warm enough depends primarily on the warmth class – Primaloft Bio duvets are available in summer, all-season, and winter warmth.
What is the difference between Primaloft Bio and regular microfiber?
Primaloft Bio is softer, lighter, and loftier, and consists of recycled polyester. You can find the comparison with microfiber in the guide Down duvet vs. microfiber.
Does Primaloft Bio release microplastics?
Like all synthetic fibers, Primaloft Bio can also release fine fibers when washed – PrimaLoft does not deny this. According to PrimaLoft, the fiber degrades significantly more in laboratory tests under landfill and marine conditions than conventional polyester. You can keep abrasion low by always using a cover and only washing the duvet when necessary.
Which duvet is more sustainable?
That depends on what is more important to you. Down is a natural material, lasts a very long time with proper care, and comes from DOWNPASS-certified sources at Traumwelt – but it is an animal product. Primaloft Bio is animal-free and consists of 100% recycled polyester according to PrimaLoft, but it is a synthetic fiber and usually does not last quite as long. Learn more about the origin of down in the guide Down duvet without live-plucking.
Which duvet lasts longer?
A well-cared-for down duvet often lasts 10 years or more. Primaloft Bio is robust and dimensionally stable, but usually does not quite reach this lifespan.
Traumwelt offers both: down duvets with 90% and 100% down and vegan Primaloft Bio duvets – all OEKO-TEX® certified, with the down duvets additionally NOMITE and DOWNPASS, made in Germany.
