In short: Wash your duvet before storing it or air it out thoroughly until it is completely dry. Then store it loosely folded in a breathable fabric bag in a dry, dark, cool place – never in plastic or vacuum bags. After taking it out, give it a good shake and air it out for a few hours.
If you switch between a summer and winter duvet depending on the season, it raises the question: How do you store your duvet properly? Incorrect storage can damage down and encourage mold. We’ll show you how to do it properly.
Before storing: Wash and air out
Before storing a duvet, you should wash it or at least air it out thoroughly. Over the course of winter, moisture can build up in the filling – damp down stored away can mold and smell unpleasant. Wash the duvet at 60 °C and dry it completely – or air it out for several hours in dry, fresh air. Choose a shaded spot for this: Direct sunlight dries out down and the cover fabric. You can find out how to wash it step by step in the guide Washing, drying & caring for your duvet.
The right container
Never in plastic bags or vacuum bags! This is the most common mistake. Down needs air – in an airtight container it will be permanently compressed and lose its loft. Heavily compressed down often never fully recovers.
Use one of these instead:
- The original fabric storage bag (often included with the product)
- A cotton bag or pillowcase
- A breathable storage box
The right place
Dry, dark, and cool – these are the three criteria for ideal storage. Damp basements or attics with large temperature fluctuations are unsuitable. A built-in wardrobe in the bedroom or a shelf in a dry room is ideal.
Do not compress
Place the duvet loosely folded in the storage container – do not compress it tightly. The less the down is compressed, the better it will be preserved.
After storing: Fluff it up
When you take the duvet out again, give it a good shake and let it air out for a few hours – preferably outdoors, but in the shade. The down needs some time to regain its full volume.
If you use two duvets alternately, store the Summer duvet with 90% down in winter and the Winter duvet with 90% down in summer.

Frequently asked questions
Can you vacuum-pack a down duvet?
It’s better not to. In a vacuum bag, the down will be heavily compressed for months and permanently lose its loft; additionally, residual moisture cannot escape. The same applies to Primaloft Bio duvets: Synthetic fibers also lose their bounce when compressed for long periods. A breathable fabric bag is the safest solution for all types of filling.
How much space does a winter duvet need in the wardrobe?
Significantly more than a summer duvet: A Traumwelt winter duvet in 135 × 200 cm has 900 g of filling, while a summer duvet of the same size has only 250 g. Therefore, plan for a large compartment where it can lie loosely.
How long can I store a duvet?
One season of a few months is no problem, provided the duvet was completely dry before storage and is kept airy, dry, and dark. After taking it out, give it a good shake and air it out for a few hours. If it remains permanently flat afterwards, read 5 signs you need a new duvet.
