Old duvet: repair, refurbish, donate or dispose of?

Patching a hole, getting a new insert, cleaning or disposing of bed springs: What you can do with an old down duvet, which waste bin it belongs in, and where you can donate it.

In short: First check if your duvet can be saved: You can patch a small hole yourself. If only the cover is worn out but the filling is still good, it is often worth having it reconditioned at a feather bed cleaning service with a new inner cover. If the filling is worn out, the duvet must be disposed of – depending on the municipality, via general waste, bulky waste, or at the recycling center. Some animal shelters and social institutions accept clean, intact duvets as donations by prior arrangement.

Every duvet eventually reaches the end of its life – or seems to. Before you dispose of your old down duvet, it is worth taking a closer look: Often there is still a lot of life left in the filling. Here you will find out when repair or reconditioning is worth it, where an old duvet belongs and how you can pass it on effectively.

Save or replace?

Condition What you can do
Small hole, individual down feathers sticking out patch yourself (see below)
Duvet feels flat or lumpy after washing let it dry completely first and give it a good shake – often residual moisture is to blame, see washing a duvet
Cover is thin, torn or yellowed, filling is still lofty Reconditioning with a new inner cover at a feather bed cleaning service
Filling is permanently flat, lumpy or musty, even though the duvet is dry replace – the guide 5 Signs You Need a New Duvet explains the signs

Patching a hole in a down duvet

  1. Push the down back in: Carefully push the protruding down feathers back into the chamber – do not pull them out.
  2. Sew finely: Close small tears with a thin needle, tear-resistant thread and small, tight stitches.
  3. Cover larger holes: Sew on a patch made of tightly woven cotton fabric. Normal, loosely woven fabric lets down feathers through.
  4. Check: Give the duvet a vigorous shake and check if any down feathers are still sticking out at the spot.

If you are losing down feathers or feathers from many places, the fabric is usually worn out. Then a new inner cover will help.

Reconditioning: What happens – and how much does it cost?

At a feather bed cleaning service, the cover is opened and the filling is removed. The down feathers and feathers are cleaned, dried and dusted, and damaged feathers are sorted out. Then the filling – supplemented if necessary – is placed in a washed or new cover.

  • Just cleaning: often from around 20–45 euros, depending on size and provider.
  • Reconditioning with a new inner cover and refilling: significantly more – depending on size, condition and amount of filling.

This is especially worth it for a high-quality filling with a high down content. Ask for a cost estimate in advance and compare it with the price of a new duvet. Note: Traumwelt does not offer its own reconditioning service – you can find feather bed cleaning services at bed specialist stores near you.

Disposing of a down duvet: Which waste stream?

The rules vary from municipality to municipality. A look at the waste ABC of your local waste disposal service will clarify it in one minute. Often the following applies:

Method When it is suitable
General waste soiled, wet or torn duvets that fit in the bin
Bulky waste large duvets or several pieces at once – depending on the municipality
Recycling center or waste transfer station clean duvets and textiles, often free of charge
Textile recycling container only if the operator expressly accepts bedding – check the container or the waste disposal service beforehand

Donate instead of throwing away

A clean, intact duvet can still be of great use to others:

  • Animal shelters: Many are happy to accept duvets, but some do not accept feather beds. Therefore, ask beforehand.
  • Homeless shelters, clothing banks, social furniture stores: Warm duvets are especially needed in winter. Ask beforehand here too.
  • Only washed and dry: Only donate duvets that you would still use yourself.

What about Primaloft and synthetic fibre duvets?

The same methods apply to vegan duvets: Clean, intact duvets can be donated, while old ones belong in general waste, bulky waste or at the recycling center, depending on the municipality. A fibre duvet cannot be reconditioned like down.

And old pillows?

The same methods apply to pillows: You can donate clean, intact pillows by prior arrangement, for example to animal shelters. Old down, feather and fibre pillows usually fit in the general waste bin – depending on the municipality, bulky waste or recycling centers also accept them. Whether a pillow can still be saved is shown by the folding test in the guide washing a down pillow. With the Traumwelt Primaloft Bio pillow, you do not have to buy a new one immediately if it loses height: As a customer, you receive free replacement filling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a down duvet go in a textile recycling container?
Only if the operator expressly accepts bedding. Many containers are only intended for clothing and shoes – in case of doubt, ask the waste disposal service.

Can a down duvet be refilled?
Yes, at a feather bed cleaning service. The filling is cleaned and supplemented with new down feathers, often together with a new inner cover.

How long does a down duvet last?
With good care, often 10 years or more. Regular airing, infrequent but thorough washing and complete drying extend the lifespan.

What should I look for in a new duvet?
Down content, class, loft, fill weight and proven origin. Everything important is in the Down Duvet Buying Guide.

Traumwelt down duvets can be washed at up to 60 °C, have a cassette stitching and a DOWNPASS-certified filling – so you can enjoy your duvet for a long time.
