Down duvets tested: What Stiftung Warentest criticized – and how to recognize a good duvet yourself

What Stiftung Warentest and ÖKO-TEST tested and criticized in duvets, what "test winner" really means – and a checklist to help you identify a good down duvet yourself.

In short: Stiftung Warentest last tested down duvets in test 11/2020: ten winter duvets with around 90% down, none rated better than "satisfactory". The most common problems were filling that shifted during washing and suppliers who could not fully document the origin of the down. In October 2026, Stiftung Warentest also tested 17 all-season synthetic duvets: 12 rated "good", and even affordable duvets can be good. We are not aware of a more recent test of pure down duvets (as of October 2026). Important: test results only apply to the tested model – with our checklist you can also identify a good duvet yourself. Traumwelt duvets were not part of the tests mentioned here.

"Down duvet test winner" is one of the most common searches before buying. But what exactly was tested, what did the testers complain about – and what does that mean for your choice? We summarize the most important tests and show you what really matters.

What tests are there?

Test What was tested Most important results
Stiftung Warentest, test 11/2013 10 down duvets No supplier could prove which farms the down came from – live-plucking therefore could not be ruled out. The testers considered the industry seals and self-commitments at the time to be ineffective.
Stiftung Warentest, test 11/2020 10 winter down duvets with approx. 90% down No duvet rated better than "satisfactory". In several, the filling shifted during washing, creating bare patches. Only 3 out of 10 suppliers could prove the origin of the down back to the farm.
Stiftung Warentest, 2019 (updated 2022) 14 winter duvets made of synthetic and natural fibers, no down All provided sufficient warmth. Two duvets shrank significantly during washing.
Stiftung Warentest, October 2026 17 all-season synthetic duvets (approx. 135/140 × 200 cm), 3 of which were for use without a cover 12 × "good", 1 × "satisfactory". Prices from 24 to around 180 euros – a 24-euro duvet had better sleep properties than a 179-euro one. The testers point out that warmth ratings are not uniformly defined.
ÖKO-TEST, October 2021 17 duvets without down Around two-thirds rated "good". Criticisms included antimony in polyester duvets, optical brighteners, and fillings that clumped after washing.

What criteria are used for testing?

In the 2020 down duvet test, Stiftung Warentest's rating was composed as follows:

  • Sleep properties (60%): Thermal insulation, breathability, how well the duvet hugs the body, down volume.
  • Durability (30%): Washing, tightness of the cover, workmanship, care instructions.
  • Declaration (10%): Do the filling, size, and weight match the specifications?

Separately, Stiftung Warentest assessed corporate responsibility: proof of origin, animal welfare, environmental protection, and transparency.

In the synthetic fiber test from October 2026, the same weighting applied (60 / 30 / 10%). Duvets intended for use without a cover were washed 12 times instead of 3 – because they need to go into the machine much more often in everyday use. Find out more in the guide Duvet without a cover.

What do the results mean for your purchase?

Five purchasing criteria can be derived from the weaknesses identified in the tests:

  1. The filling must stay in place. A cassette-quilted design with internal baffles prevents the down from shifting – even after washing. Find out more in the guide Cassette quilting explained.
  2. The origin must be documented. A traceability seal such as DOWNPASS rules out live-plucking and stuffing mills.
  3. The specifications must be complete. Down content, class according to EN 12934, filling weight per size, and ideally the fill power in cuin.
  4. The duvet must be washable. Check the washing temperature on the care label and whether tumble drying is permitted.
  5. Harmful substances should be tested. The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 seal confirms that the materials have been tested for harmful substances.

What you should know about "test winners"

  • A test result only applies to the tested model – not automatically to other sizes, warmth ratings, or successor models.
  • The date matters: A test from 2020 says little about a supplier's current quality.
  • Warmth ratings are not standardized: "All-season" or "winter" does not mean the same thing for every supplier. It is better to compare the fill quantity in grams for the same size.
  • Not every "test winner" list is based on a laboratory test. Check who tested it and how. Stiftung Warentest and ÖKO-TEST publish their testing criteria.

And the Traumwelt duvets?

Traumwelt duvets were not part of the tests mentioned here. What we can show you are the features from the checklist: Our down duvets have 90% or 100% Class I down with a fill power of approx. 750 cuin, cassette quilting, and a stated filling weight for each size. The filling is DOWNPASS-certified, the cover is NOMITE-certified, and all materials are tested according to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. According to the care label, the duvets are washable up to 60°C and suitable for tumble drying.

Frequently asked questions

Which down duvet is the test winner from Stiftung Warentest?
In the latest down duvet test (test 11/2020), none of the ten duvets rated better than "satisfactory". Which exact duvets were tested can be found on the Stiftung Warentest website.

Is there a current test from 2025 or 2026?
Yes, but not for down: In October 2026, Stiftung Warentest tested 17 all-season synthetic duvets, 12 of which rated "good". We are not aware of a more recent pure down duvet test than test 11/2020 (as of October 2026). Older results only apply to the models tested at the time.

Were vegan duvets also tested?
Yes: Stiftung Warentest tested all-season synthetic duvets in October 2026, winter duvets made of synthetic and natural fibers in 2019; ÖKO-TEST tested duvets without down in 2021. The results only apply to the tested models in each case. What matters for vegan duvets can be found in the guide Down duvet or Primaloft Bio?.

Can I use a duvet without a cover?
Only if it is expressly designed for it – and then you have to wash it much more often. Down duvets and all Traumwelt duvets belong in a duvet cover. Find out more in the guide Duvet without a cover.

Is an expensive down duvet automatically better?
No. In the 2020 down test, prices ranged from approximately 100 to 450 euros, yet no duvet rated better than "satisfactory". And in the 2026 synthetic fiber test, a 24-euro duvet had better sleep properties than a 179-euro one. The deciding factors are the features from the checklist. Find out more in the guide How much should a good duvet cost?.
