In short: Babies under 12 months should sleep without a duvet; from about 1–2 years, well-fitting duvets are safe. The most important criterion is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. Children's beds (70 × 140 cm) need a 100 × 135 cm duvet, while from the youth bed, 135 × 200 cm is suitable. Both down and Primaloft Bio are suitable.

Many parents have legitimate questions about children's bedding: Which material is safe? Which size is suitable? From what age can children sleep with down? We answer the most important questions.
From what age are down duvets suitable for children?
For babies under 12 months, duvets are generally not recommended – the suffocation risk is too high. From toddler age (approx. 1–2 years), well-fitting duvets are safe. Down duvets with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification are well suited for children from this age.
Which materials are safe for children?
The most important criterion is the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certificate. It confirms that all materials – including dyes and auxiliaries – have been tested for harmful substances. All our products carry this certificate.
Down or Primaloft Bio for children?
Both materials are suitable for children. Primaloft Bio has the advantage that it can be washed more frequently and at higher temperatures – practical for everyday life with children. Down offers a more natural sleeping climate. For children with house dust allergies, we recommend NOMITE-certified down duvets or Primaloft Bio.
Which size for children's beds?
Standard children's beds (70x140 cm) need a 100x135 cm duvet. From the youth bed (90x200 cm), the standard size 135x200 cm is suitable. All our duvets are available in 135x200 cm.
Which duvet size at which age?
| Age | Bed | Duvet |
|---|---|---|
| 0–12 months | Baby bed 60 × 120 or 70 × 140 cm | no duvet – baby sleeping bag |
| approx. 1–2 to 6 years | Children's bed 70 × 140 cm | 100 × 135 cm |
| usually from approx. 6–8 years | Youth bed 90 × 200 cm | 135 × 200 cm |
The deciding factor is not the exact age, but the bed: The duvet should fit the sleeping surface. A 135 × 200 cm duvet is too large for a 140 cm long children's bed and hangs far over. It becomes practical as soon as your child moves into a bed with a length of 200 cm.
Which warmth level for children?
Children do not regulate their body temperature as efficiently as adults. For well-heated children's rooms, we recommend an all-season duvet. For cool children's rooms below 18°C, a winter duvet. In summer, a light all-season or summer duvet is sufficient.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there Traumwelt duvets in children's size 100 × 135 cm?
No. Our duvets are available from 135 × 200 cm – so suitable from the youth bed (90 × 200 cm). For the children's bed, you need a 100 × 135 cm duvet from a specialist provider.
Which Traumwelt duvet is suitable for the youth bed?
For normally heated rooms, an all-season duvet in 135 × 200 cm: as a down duvet with 624 g filling (90% down) or vegan as an Primaloft Bio all-season duvet with 625 g. Both are OEKO-TEX® certified and washable at 60 °C.
How often should I wash a children's duvet?
That depends on everyday life. You can wash Primaloft Bio duvets up to 4 times a year at 60 °C – practical for minor mishaps. Down duvets need a full wash less often. Everything about it in the guide Washing a duvet.
From what age can my child use a duvet with a length of 200 cm?
As soon as they move into a bed with a 200 cm sleeping surface – for many children sometime between 6 and 8 years. Then the standard size 135 × 200 cm is suitable. Before that, a 100 × 135 cm duvet is the better choice.
Does a baby need a down duvet or is microfiber enough?
Neither: In the first year of life, a baby sleeps most safely without a duvet in a suitable baby sleeping bag. A duvet is only an option from about 1–2 years.
Which material is safest for a children's duvet?
Whether down or fiber is secondary. What matters are tested materials with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, a size suitable for the bed, and a warmth level suitable for the room temperature. For house dust allergies, a NOMITE-certified cover or a duvet washable at 60 °C helps.
