One freezes, one sweats: The right duvet for couples
One person is freezing while the other is sweating? Here’s how you as a couple can find the right solution: two blankets, different warmth ratings, or a climate blanket for the warm sleeper.
Contents
In short: If two people have different temperature preferences, the best solution is usually two separate duvets in 135 × 200 cm or 155 × 220 cm – each in the appropriate warmth rating. Those who get cold quickly should choose a warmer duvet, while those who get hot quickly should choose a lighter one or a climate-controlled duvet with breathable climate bands. A single duvet in 200 × 200 or 240 × 220 cm is only suitable if both people sleep at a similar temperature.
Why do partners often sleep at different temperatures?
Temperature preference is individual: body size, metabolism, age and habits all play a role. At the same room temperature, one person may shiver while the other kicks off the duvet. A single duvet is then a compromise for at least one of them.
One shared duvet or two separate duvets?
| One shared duvet | Two separate duvets | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 200 × 200 or 240 × 220 cm | each 135 × 200 or 155 × 220 cm |
| Warmth | the same for both | can be chosen individually |
| Sleep | your partner's movements are noticeable, the duvet is pulled away | everyone can sleep undisturbed |
| Suitable if | both sleep at a similar temperature | one gets cold and one gets hot |
If you both sleep at a similar temperature and would like a shared duvet, you will find all suitable models under Duvets 200 × 200 cm and Duvets 240 × 220 cm. Suitable bedding is available in both sizes, each with two pillowcases measuring 80 × 80 cm. You can find the advantages and disadvantages of a shared duvet and a price comparison in the guide Duvet 200 × 200: One large duvet or two separate ones?
Which duvet is right for whom?
- Those who get cold quickly: one warmth rating higher, for example a Winter Down Duvet.
- Those who sleep comfortably at a moderate temperature: the All-Season Down Duvet.
- Those who get hot quickly: one lightness rating higher or the All-Season Climate-Controlled Duvet. It warms like an all-season duvet, but its climate bands allow excess heat to escape more easily. The difference is explained in the guide Climate-Controlled Duvet or Baffle Box Duvet?
Tips for a shared bedroom
- Room temperature: A cool bedroom at around 16 to 19 °C is comfortable for most people – the partner who gets cold can compensate with a warmer duvet.
- Matching bedding: Two duvets in the same size and matching bedding look neat, even if the fillings are different.
- The same length: If one of you is over 1.85 m tall, choose 155 × 220 cm for both – then the bedding will also match.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use two single duvets in a double bed?
Yes, this is even common in Germany. Two duvets measuring 135 × 200 cm fit on a bed that is at least 160 cm wide.
Are there duvets with two temperature zones?
Such special duvets do exist, but they are rare and difficult to find. Two separate duvets are more flexible: everyone can change their duvet independently, for example to a lighter one in summer.
